Wuhan University, one of the key universities directly under the Ministry of Education of the Peoples Republic of China, is located at the foot of Luojia Hill and by the side of the picturesque East Lake in the city of Wuhan. The campus, which covers an area of 200 hectres, is well reputed for its environment of pleasant scenic beauty and architecture of traditional Chinese antique style. For this, the university is delightfully referred to as a garden-like university.
Wuhan University can be traced back to Ziqiang Institute, which was founded in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong, governor of Hunan and Hubei Provinces in the late Qing Dynasty. It was he who petitioned to the Qing Government for permission to found the institute. It was
renamed in sequence Foreign Languages Institute, National Wuchang Higher Normal College, National Wuchang Normal University, National Wuchang University, and National Zhongshan University. In July, 1928, it was finally established as National Wuhan University. During the War of Resistance against the Japanese Aggression, the university was moved to Luoshan, Sichuan Province. Not until the War was over, did the university
move back to Luojia Hill. Up to the end of 1946, the university consisted of six colleges, i.e. liberal arts, law, sciences, engineering, agriculture and medicine. The university, with a
great number of celebrated scholars working as teachers here, had been made extensively influential and prestigious both at home and abroad. In 1948, Oxford University, Britain, in an official letter to the Ministry of Education of the Chinese National Government, made
the confirmation that bachelors of liberal arts and sciences who graduated from Wuhan University with average grades above 80 were eligible for the qualifications of Oxford seniors. In 1952, with national-wide reshuffling and readjustments of colleges and
departments of higher education institutions, some of the colleges and departments were removed from Wuhan University to incorporate with those in other colleges and universities
into new ones, thus Wuhan University was made a comprehensive university composed of liberal arts and sciences departments. Since 1978, the university has made every endeavor to remold itself with the intention to work out a proper way to run ite education.
As a result of painstaking efforts of 20 years, a new multi-discipline layout for the comprehensive and coordinating development of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, technological sciences and administrative sciences has taken shape in the
university.
